According to the United Nations one billion people on Earth live in slums. This figure is projected to increase to two billion by 2030.  A few of the fact below illustrate the state of the world's housing crisis:

• At the end of 2008 there were an estimated 26 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) displaced by conflicts around the world.
• Millions more have recently been made homeless homeless by natural disasters.
• Some 840 million people remain malnourished,
• 1.3 billion do not have access to clean water,
• One in seven children of primary school age is out of school.
• An estimated 1.5 billion people subsist on less than one US dollar per day
• Some 2.8 billion subsist on less than two dollars a day.
